What a rush! Having spanked it last year with their wide-armed arsenal of multi-tempo flexors, and a live show locked and loaded for 2013, Rewind up the ante once again with this spine-tingling selection of raw rave-tinged rollers…
The title track ‘Soul Survivors’ (fet Ra & Jah Nation) Sums up Rewind’s abilities with action-packed aplomb. An elastic, electrifying bassline sets the mood as we’re massaged all over by an emotive vocal chant and refreshingly steppy drums that keep you on your toes in every sense of the word.
Meanwhile, ‘Need Your Love’ also featuring Ra & Jah Nation, is a futuristic rave flashback. Powered by turbo pianos and another quintessential ravetastic vocal, we’re soon thrown head-first into bodyslamming half-step and screaming bass melody. Dubstep seldom comes with such euphoric energy, making this an extra special moment for all 140 heads.
Up next; ‘Reload’ – a murky monster that harbours no less than 10 different bass sounds, all tightly woven to create one face-melting medley of freaky sub frequency fusion. This is made extra special as lush synths ease you from the sizzles and grizzles on the breakdown.
‘Tone Def’ brings us to a show-stopping D&B finale. Swashbuckling double kicks and courageous cymbal splashes provide a firm foundation for a weave of dreamy pads and classic rave vocal refrains. A monstrous conclusion to a wonderfully wide-armed EP: this type of peaktime material should be handled with serious care.
Soul-surviving shock-outs, each and every one of them… Rewind genuinely live up their name.
